about

For ROSE016 we welcome back Colophon for his third release on the label and on remix duties we have Fabrice Lig – an artist who really has his own unique sound. Well known for his particularly funky use of Roland’s SH101 synth, and for his emotional and personal melodies and harmonies, he steps up with another slice of aural magic.
And as always, Estroe throws in a remix for good measure.
For this ep, as Colophon put it, “Late night jams developed into a series of new tracks made with old analogue synths and drumcomputers. It was hours of fun tweaking, moving and shaping sounds that are full of character.”

Atomic Orbital is a deeply funky and otherworldly piece. On its own, the neurotically groovy and elastic bassline has an almost sinister feel to it, and the underlying reverb drenched atmospherics add to the foreboding. However, warm and rich chords are brought into the mix and the mood transforms into something more laid back.

Fabrice Lig adds his own distinctive style to his interpretation of Atomic Orbital. Always changing, ever evolving and insanely funky. His expert use of syncopated short bass stabs, dance around like supercharged electrons on an atomic dancefloor. Brassy pads and intricate percussion patterns give the mix a full on, groove laced party vibe.

Colophon’s Nightlights is a pacey, bassline – driven journey through a neon soundscape. Softly glowing pads set the mood and bring with them the emotion of the track. The bassline and its component layers, ripple and glitter in places like charged particles in an auroral display while the reverb soaked bells shimmer at the break like faint celestial bodies.

Estroe’s remix of Nighlights is an iridescent interpretation of the original. Once again the track pulses along, this time though, like a trip on an electric highway. Shimmering pads glide through the mix like one is passing streetlights. A bell like arpeggio gives the track a sense of pace while strobe like percussion flash by like the lights of oncoming traffic.

Atomic Orbital (Model2S) is a dubbier version of the original and is a mix of dreamy melancholic swirls and electromagnetic trills. With its rolling, echo washed pads, distant percussion and deep filtered bassline it takes the listener to the heart of the atom.
